Quick answer

A digital download store lets customers pay online and download design files such as DXF, ZIP, embroidery or sewing patterns instantly, with no manual sending. EOMS BD builds custom stores with secure, expiring download links, download limits, licence terms at checkout and an admin panel for uploading files, all owned by you.

  • Payment confirmed by your chosen gateway, then instant download plus a customer library.
  • Files stored privately, served only to paying customers, with expiring links and download limits.
  • Licence page, personal and commercial licence options, and acceptance recorded on each order.
  • Admin panel to upload files, update versions and track downloads.
  • Full source code, domain and hosting in your name; fixed written quote.

What a digital download store does

A digital download store lets customers browse your files, pay online and download what they bought immediately, without you sending anything by hand. The store handles payment, delivery and access control automatically, day and night.

Many sellers of design files start by emailing files after each payment or by posting links in messages. That works for a handful of orders, but it does not scale: customers wait, links get forwarded, and there is no record of who bought which licence. A dedicated store solves those problems by tying every download to a confirmed payment.

A typical store includes:

  • Product pages with preview images, file format details and licence information.
  • A checkout connected to the payment gateway you choose.
  • Automatic delivery of secure download links once payment is confirmed.
  • A customer account area where buyers can find their past purchases.
  • An admin panel where you upload files, set prices and track orders.

What kinds of files you can sell

Almost any file a customer can use after downloading can be sold this way. The store treats the preview (what the customer sees) and the deliverable (what the customer receives) as separate items.

File typeTypical buyersDelivery notes
DXF and other CAD / cutting filesCNC, laser and plasma cutting workshops, signmakersShow a rendered preview image; deliver the DXF, often with alternative formats in a ZIP.
Embroidery design filesEmbroidery businesses and hobbyistsList the machine formats included so buyers know the file suits their equipment.
Sewing and garment patternsHome sewers, small fashion brandsDeliver printable PDFs or pattern files; a size chart on the product page reduces support questions.
Graphic and print templatesDesigners, small businesses, print shopsBundle the source files in a ZIP with a short readme that lists any fonts used.
3D printing and model filesMakers and product designersAdd renders from several angles and state the intended print settings.
Bundles and collectionsRepeat customersSell several files together as a single ZIP or as a group of individual downloads.

If you sell fonts, stock assets or files that include third-party elements, make sure you hold the rights to resell them. Only sell files you created or are licensed to distribute.

How the purchase-to-download flow works

The customer pays, the payment gateway confirms the payment, and the store releases the download straight away. No manual step is needed on your side.

  1. Browse: the customer views product images, formats and the licence summary.
  2. Checkout: they choose a licence option if you offer more than one, accept the licence terms and pay through your chosen gateway.
  3. Confirmation: the store waits for the gateway's payment confirmation before releasing anything, so unpaid or failed orders never unlock files.
  4. Instant delivery: a secure download link appears on the order confirmation page and is sent by email.
  5. Library: the purchase is saved in the customer's account, so they can return to it within the limits you set.

The payment gateway is integrated to suit your business and country, and the gateway's own fees are paid to the gateway provider. Taxes on digital goods vary between countries and regions, so check the current rules with your accountant or tax adviser before you set prices.

Secure delivery: protecting your files from link sharing

The goal of secure delivery is that only paying customers can download your files, and that a forwarded link stops working quickly. Several layers work together to achieve this.

  • Files stored outside the public web folder, so there is no direct address anyone can guess or share.
  • Downloads served through an authorised route that checks the order and the customer before sending the file.
  • Expiring links that stop working after a set period.
  • Download limits per purchase, so one link cannot be used an unlimited number of times.
  • Download logs showing which customer downloaded which file and when, useful if you suspect misuse.
  • Watermarked or low-resolution previews, so the product images are not a usable substitute for the file.

No technical system can stop a paying customer from copying a file after they have downloaded it. Secure delivery stops casual link sharing; a clear licence, previews that are not usable on their own and good records of each sale are what protect you beyond that.

Licence terms and licence options

A licence tells the buyer what they may and may not do with your file. Publishing it clearly, and asking customers to accept it at checkout, sets expectations and gives you something to point to if a file is misused.

Common approaches that the store can support:

  • A dedicated licence page linked from every product and from the checkout.
  • Licence options as product variants, for example a personal-use licence and a commercial-use licence at different prices.
  • An acceptance checkbox at checkout, with the accepted licence recorded on the order.
  • A licence text file included inside each ZIP download.

The wording of your licence is a legal matter. We build the pages and the checkout logic; have the licence text itself drafted or reviewed by a lawyer familiar with the countries where you sell.

Managing the store from the admin panel

Day to day, you should be able to run the store without a developer. The admin panel is where you add products, upload files and see what is selling.

  • Create products with images, descriptions, formats and licence options.
  • Upload the deliverable files (DXF, ZIP, PDF and other formats) securely, separate from the preview images.
  • Replace a file with an updated version when you improve a design.
  • Organise products into categories so customers can browse by type or use.
  • View orders, payments and download history for each customer.
  • Reset a customer's download allowance when they genuinely need to download again.

A digital store can also sit alongside physical products in the same shop, for example printed patterns or finished items as well as files. Any additional features, such as subscriptions or a multi-vendor marketplace, are scoped and quoted in writing before work begins.

Ownership, technology and cost

You own the finished store outright and receive a fixed, written, line-by-line quote before development starts, so the costs are transparent from day one.

The store is built on Laravel (latest stable release), the latest supported PHP and MySQL. The domain is registered in your name, hosting is bought on your own account, and the full source code, database and credentials are handed over at launch. Google Search Console, Analytics and Meta Pixel are set up on your own accounts. For a full explanation of these terms, read our page on e-commerce websites with full source code ownership.

After launch you receive 6 months of free support, 1 year of free bug fixing, a free SSL certificate and daily backups kept for 30 days that you can download yourself. Optional yearly maintenance plans are available for international clients.

Frequently asked questions

Can customers download the file immediately after paying?

Yes. Once the payment gateway confirms the payment, a secure download link appears on the order confirmation page and is emailed to the customer. The purchase is also saved in their account so they can find it again within the limits you set.

How do you stop people sharing download links?

Files are stored outside the public web folder and served only after the store checks the order. Links expire after a set period and each purchase has a download limit, so a forwarded link stops working. No system can stop a buyer copying a file they have downloaded, which is why a clear licence matters too.

Which payment gateways can you integrate?

We integrate the gateway you choose, based on what is available to your business and the countries you sell in. The gateway's own fees are paid to the gateway provider. We confirm the integration details in the written quote.

Can I offer personal and commercial licences?

Yes. Licence options can be set up as product variants at different prices, linked to a dedicated licence page, with an acceptance checkbox at checkout and the chosen licence recorded on the order. The licence wording itself should be reviewed by a lawyer.

Can I sell physical products in the same store?

Yes. A store can sell digital files and physical products side by side, for example printed patterns alongside downloadable ones. Additional features such as subscriptions are scoped and quoted in writing before work begins.

Do I own the store and the code?

Yes. The domain is registered in your name, hosting is on your own account, and the full source code, database and credentials are handed over at launch. You can move to another developer or server without any barrier or mandatory fee.
